On The Road at Cannes Festival!
1. After (seriously) 17 years of development, the major new Hollywood Walter Salles/Francis Ford Coppola film of On The Road is going to premiere on May 23, four months and twelve days from now, at the Cannes Film Festival in the French Riviera. I can't believe the day is actually going to come.
I'm not sure what to expect from this film, but there's no doubt that Jack Kerouac, a Breton Francophile, would have been pleased about a prestigious Cannes festival premiere. Very little is currently known about the film of On The Road, and only a single still image has been seen: the photo above, showing Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund as Marylou and Dean Moriarty apparently in one of the movie's big dance numbers. The image may give some idea of the director's photographic style (muted colors, naturalistic setting, not bad so far), but there's no word yet on what the entire film is like. I'm looking forward to seeing a preview trailer soon. Thanks to the Beat Museum in San Francisco (always the first place to check for news about this film) for the scoop about the opening at Cannes. (For the record, the news is still unconfirmed, but it's true.)
2. The two main characters in On The Road are Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise, but since Kristen Stewart is the biggest star in the film, the character of Marylou will probably receive special emphasis. Marylou was based on Neal Cassady's real-life wife Luanne Henderson, and those interested in learning more about this little-known figure from Beat Generation history will enjoy One and Only: The Untold Story of On the Road
, a new book by Gerald Nicosia and Anne Marie Santos that tells the story of On The Road (and all that followed) from a new point of view. As the youngest and least commanding member of the real-life Kerouac/Cassady traveling entourage fictionalized in On The Road, Luanne has often been imagined or depicted by literary biographers as a hapless unfortunate, caught in the Beat Generation whirlwind and then left behind after they became famous. One and Only presents Luanne as more knowing and more in control of her situation than Kerouac's novel depicts, and also shows her to be a remarkable, intuitive, sensitive and courageous woman.

On The Road at Cannes festival?
"On The Road" presented at the next Cannes festival?
Via his twitter account, the producer Charles Gillibert, who works for the MK2 company, announced that "On The Road", adaptation of Jack Kerouacs novel by the Brazilian director Walter Salles, will be released in France on May 23 2012, that's to say during the 65th Cannes festival, which will be held from May 16 to May 27. This brings up the speculations about a presentation of the movie on the Croisette, with, on the red carpet, the young actors Sam Riley and Kristen Stewart (i know, they wrote Kirsten.)

Kristens preparation progress for On The Road

In his article, author Lionel Rolfe delves into Gerald Nicosia’s book “One And Only: The Untold Story of On The Road” which focuses on Lu Anne Henderson’s role in the story of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady’s friendship and the advent of the Beat Generation. Rolfe discusses how Mr. Nicosia’s research and expertise affected ‘On The Road’ the film, and in particular, Kristen’s preparation process for the role of Marylou and the “necessary estrogen” of ‘On The Road’.
Mr. Rolfe writes, “The new film is more from the viewpoint of Lu Anne, Cassady’s first wife. That is because Nicosia as the preeminent Kerouac scholar was hired as an advisor for “On The Road.” When he played the tapes for actress Kristen Stewart, both he and the actress had some major revelations.
Stewart plays Marylou, who was 15 when she met Cassady. Marylou was a sweet 16 when they married, discounted as the stunning 16-year-old blond bimbo who Kerouac and Cassady shared, but otherwise was of little account. “One And Only: The Untold Story of On The Road” strongly disputes that account, and portrays Lu Anne as as the glue that bound these two powerful characters. She molded their relationship, and thus was a major catalyst of American literature…
To be sure, a lot of serendipity was involved in how the story unfolded. Nicosia decided to play the interview for Stewart during a beat boot camp “On The Road” director Walter Salles set up in Montreal in the summer of 2010. Nicosia had recorded the hours-long interview with Lu Anne in 1978. For Stewart, she was looking for the rhythm of Lu Anne’s language. For Nicosia, he realized that he had not really understood what Lu Anne was saying when he first recorded the interview…
Rolfe asked Nicosia to try and make of it what he could.
“What we now know is that the dynamic duo of Kerouac and Cassady was actually a trio: Neal, Lu Anne, and Jack,” he replied.”It was always assumed that these two guys, cultural outlaws, a kind of modern-day Butch Cassady and Sundance Kid, just magically found each other, combined forces, and started the Beat Generation.
“What we now know, thanks to Lu Anne’s testimony, is that both these guys were enormously insecure and vulnerable, that they were very different (though both were misfits in post-World War II America), and that neither one liked or trusted the other when they met.
“It took the depth and insight of a woman’s love, Lu Anne’s, to allow them to see enough in each other’s character, and in each other’s heart, to begin to form the friendship that changed contemporary America. Without Lu Anne–the “necessary estrogen,” as Kristen Stewart put it–the chemical reaction, the new and potent compound of Kerouac-Cassady, simply wouldn’t have happened or existed.

Why haven't we heard from On The Road or even had a trailer. We maybe have an answer. This information comes straight from Albert Hinkle's facebook account.
Maybe this is a good reason why nothing about the movie is revealed. Let's just hope the movie will be released!

*UPDATE*
KSFranceCom: Hello, did you have to possibility to see the trailer of On The Road at the Congres? If you had, what were your impressions?
PanicCinema: You're talking about the filming adaptation of Kerouac? I don't know what to think about it but I want to read the book now.
But it's a proper adaptation of a big classic. There is a certain energy in all this.
PanicCinema: I don't have a proper memory of it but I'd say 2'30 easily. It's a rythmical assembly that reveales a lot of images from the movie.
Over the images: a voice, probably from the principal character, that deliveres us his view of the world.
PanicCinema: I had the feeling mostly having seen the actors and few girls so a bit of Kristen Stewart.

"On The Road" not ready for Fall Festivals
The long waited movie "On The Road" won't be ready for the Fall festivals. That's what reports @larry411 .
Like Bailey, Luddy doesn't read scripts, but he keeps in close personal touch with directors. This year he's been tracking his pal Walter Salles for "On the Road," but Salles told Luddy he's still working on the sound and won't be ready for any fall festivals.
